Awakening Our Democracy: What’s At Stake In These Polarized Times

February 15, 2024
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Event time is displayed in your time zone.

The need for civic dialogue has never been greater. Join a panel of experts, co-hosted by University Life and the Journalism School, to explore how current events – and the often binary discussions that surround them – inform our understanding of democracy and the possibilities for overcoming polarization and strengthening civic engagement.

Our panelists will examine the elements that prevent us from coming together for civil discourse and shared problem solving, and explore where we go from here.

Panelists:

  • Courtney D. Cogburn, Associate Professor of Social Work; Special Advisor to the Dean, Columbia School of Social Work
  • Jelani Cobb, Dean; Henry R. Luce Professor of Journalism, Columbia Graduate School of Journalism
  • Jonathan Friedman, Director, Free Expression and Education Programs, PEN America
  • Mae Ngai, Lung Family Professor of Asian American Studies, Professor of History, Columbia University
  • Bruce Usher, Professor of Professional Practice, Columbia Business Schoo

  • Moderated by: Maria Hinojosa, Distinguished Journalist in Residence, Barnard College

RSVP is optional but recommended. This event is first-come, first-served until space capacity is reached. Please bring your CUID.
