UCI Student Fellowship

About the Fellowship

UCI Student Fellows are crucial to this work. As student leaders, they help bring UCI’s mission to life by designing and supporting programs that bring people together across differences, cultivate habits of thoughtful engagement, and create spaces where both ideas and relationships matter.

This paid fellowship is for students who want to take seriously the question of what it means to build community at Columbia. We are looking for students who are thoughtful about the opportunities and challenges of community in a complex and dynamic environment, willing to take initiative and work collaboratively, and curious about how intellectual life connects to lived experience.

In coordination with the Director of UCI, Fellows:

  • Design programs that bring people together across differences, with significant room to pursue their own ideas, interests, and creative approaches
  • Support UCI initiatives – including storytelling projects, dialogue programs, faculty-student engagement – through active participation and consistent presence
  • Help shape the direction of UCI through ongoing reflection and feedback

Commitment

Fellows are expected to:

  • Commit approximately 6 hours per week to UCI-related work
  • Attend regular cohort meetings (approximately weekly or biweekly) with the Director of UCI
  • Contribute to and support the work of fellow cohort members
  • Co-lead at least one project or event each semester
  • Participate in all UCI programs and initiatives

To Apply

In one to two pages, please respond to the following questions:

  • What draws you to this fellowship, and how do you envision contributing to UCI?
  • What kinds of spaces, conversations, or forms of community do you wish existed more fully at Columbia?
  • What experience, if any, do you have with event planning, outreach and promotion, facilitation, or related work?
